We’re talking about TechStars in NYC, a mentorship-driven, seed accelerator for big opportunity startup technology companies. This past weekend, SalesLoft was invited to join the TechStars crew for a day (TS4AD) in Manhattan with a chance to earn a spot in their 3 month spring cohort. For those not familiar, this is the entrepreneur’s equivalent of Yale or Harvard, but at TechStars, the professors (mentors) earned their tenure by building companies.
Harder to get into than Harvard or Yale.
After our experience this weekend, we wanted to offer some perspective for other companies applying in the future:
- It’s ALL about the passion. We know it’s cliché, but hear us out. The guys who run this show don’t need your money, they’re in it for the love of the game. That game being building and creating valuable businesses for the world. That’s why they’re there, 8:00 a.m., traveling through the snow on a Saturday morning, hoodies on, ready to help. So be something that can become something amazing in their system. It’s what they live for.
- The core team must be right. The TechStars crew is writing the book on evaluating tech startup talent. Everyone interviewed is smart, doing something interesting with advanced technology, & has superior skills as a baseline. What’s going to separate your team from others? It must be your people (we suggest you see #1 again).
- NYC is the ish for start-ups. No kidding, this is the place to be. Anyone that a startup would ever want to meet is either in the city or coming through soon. If you’re not networked in this area, start. Follow the teams/mentors on Twitter, interact with them, show your progress. Even though you and your team may not live in NYC, you can still be part of the ecosystem. Techstars is leading the way of creating a start-up factory…watch out Bay Area 🙂
All in all, we had a great time at Techstars for a Day in NYC. Thanks to those who participated and built this system so we could experience it. You all truly rock!
SalesLoft looks to be the first ever company from Atlanta, Georgia to join a TechStars cohort. Support the cause by sending out this tweet:
